Origins of the Lo Shu: The Divine Turtle's Gift
Legend has it that over 4,000 years ago, while the Great Yu was taming the floods, a divine turtle emerged from the Luo River with a mysterious arrangement of numbers inscribed on its shell. This arrangement became known as the "Lo Shu" (洛书) — one of the cornerstones of Chinese mathematics and philosophy.
The Lo Shu arranges numbers in a 3×3 grid:
4 9 2 3 5 7 8 1 6
This grid has a remarkable property — every row, column, and diagonal sums to exactly 15. In mathematics, this is called a "Magic Square," and the Lo Shu is the earliest known magic square in human history.
However, the Lo Shu's significance extends far beyond mathematics. In Chinese tradition, it is viewed as a microcosm of cosmic order — nine numbers representing nine core life domains, their arrangement reflecting the flow of energy between heaven and earth.
